‘A vehicle dipped in Angelic Approval.’
Pope Francis continues to champion sustainability, reflecting the environmental themes of his encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ (Praise be to you) document.
Mercedes-Benz, a long-time supplier of Vatican vehicles for 94 years, developed a new electric Popemobile based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class EV.
The development took one year in close collaboration with the Vatican.
Mercedes adapted the G-Class EV’s quad-motor electric drivetrain for low-speed use, which is ideal for papal public engagements.
It features a central, height-adjustable swivel chair for the Pope, ensuring visibility and ease of addressing the audience.
Additionally, two smaller rear passenger seats are fitted.
Also, the Mercedes has a custom rear-hinged door and an optional hardtop roof for rain protection.
The Popemobile is finished in Signature Pearl White paintwork.
The G-Class has been a Popemobile base for 45 years, maintaining its iconic status.
Previous environmentally friendly Vatican vehicles include a hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai (2019) and a Renault Kangoo electric van (2012).
The new Popemobile will debut at the 2025 Jubilee, a major Catholic event held every 25 years that will attract millions of pilgrims.
The Jubilee begins this Christmas Eve, marking a key moment for showcasing the Vatican’s sustainable transport efforts.
This innovative Popemobile reinforces Pope Francis’s environmental advocacy while continuing a nearly century-long partnership with Mercedes-Benz.
‘Pope Francis is officially the first world leader to have a carbon footprint smaller than his sandals!’
