De Tomaso and Isabelle

De Tomaso name sends shivers down the spine; over two years ago, at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed, De Tomaso introduced the market to the P72, inspired by the 1960s De Tomaso P70. The P72 uses the same platform as the German Apollo Automobil Intensa Emozione.

The De Tomaso P72 is powered by a Ford-sourced 5.0-litre V8 tuned and supercharged by Roush to produce 700 horsepower. Production of the P72 is due to start in Q4, 2022, costing £639,000.

At the same time, De Tomaso is working on a project known as Isabelle; this may be a track-only version of the P72; whilst no accurate details are available. Please see below a teaser video:

While most people have heard of De Tomaso, what is less well known, two racing drivers, Alejandro de Tomaso and Elizabeth ‘Isabelle’ Haskell, met and married within a year. ‘Isabelle’ was the daughter of William C Durant, one of the founders of General Motors. Because of her passion for cars, there was an assumption that she would join General Motors.

The heiress was a super racing car driver, even completing the 12-hour race at Sebring in Florida. Frustrated by being forced to race against other women, she moved to Europe, where she went toe to toe with the best drivers in the world.

Alongside her husband, Alejandro de Tomaso, she established the De Tomaso Automobili S.p.A., which manufactured Formula One cars and exotic sports cars, including the Pantera (Elvis Presley owned one).

Regarding the ‘secret’ new car, the Isabelle is a revival of the nameplate from the 1950s Isabelle Formula 2 race car named after De Tomaso’s wife that made its racing debut in 1959.

The production of the P72 will begin in the last quarter of 2022.
