All about Sustainability

14 July 2023

Formula One has set its sustainability targets for the 2024 race season; however, with 24 races, its likelihood of achieving its ambitions is reduced.

Although the 2023 race season started with 24 races, China withdrew due to Covid restrictions, and Imola cancelled due to devastating flooding.

Formula One has a Net Zero commitment for 2030.

The return of a South Africa Grand Prix has been abandoned because of its political ties to Russia.

A significant step was to get each Grand Prix ‘regionalised’ this season.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA, said: ‘We want to make the global spectacle of Formula One more efficient in terms of environmental sustainability and more manageable for the travelling staff who dedicate so much of their time to our sport.’

If you look at the calendar, you can see how the planning has been implemented.

There are a few exceptions, for example, Canada, who feel that moving them from their usual June venue, weather conditions earlier may hamper the event.

The plan was that Canada was matched with Miami in May.

Canada now sits between Monaco and Spain F1.

Best laid plans of mice and men!
