Mr Cool, Steve McQueen was known for his passion for high-performance motorcars and motorbikes.
In fact, his car collection amounted to over one hundred and a similar number of motorbikes.
To name but a few:
♖ 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 that he ordered new from Italy while filming Bullitt.
♖ 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso: One of the most sophisticated cars in his collection.
♖ Porsche 911S. He ordered and delivered to the film set of Le Mans.
♖ Porsche 917K. He used the iconic car in the Le Mans film.
♖ Chevrolet Corvette. A 1961 Corvette that Steve raced.
♖ Mini Cooper S. He had a passion for small, fast cars.
♖ The 1968 Ford Mustang GT390 Fastback was used in the film Bullitt; contrary to popular belief, Mr. McQueen did not own it.
But of all the cars, his absolute favourite was a Jaguar XKSS.
Steve bought the Jaguar XKSS in 1968. The car was a road-going version of the Jaguar D-type, a successful racing car of its time.
He was impressed with the engineering, performance, and sheer beauty of the XKSS.
He named it ‘The Green Rat’.
At one point, he decided to sell it and immediately regretted it. He eventually tracked it down and regained ownership.
Steve McQueen loved his cars with the intensity only a true racing driver understands—every ride was a scene stolen from life’s movie.
