Italy’s Moggie

06 October 2022

The Morgan Motor Company is an English motor car manufacturer owned by the Italian investment group Investindustrial. Morgan was founded in 1910 by Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan. Morgan and based in Malvern.

It continues to this day to hand-build premium sports cars with a classic design. The Morgan brand is synonymous with quintessential British craftsmanship.

Morgan Motor Company, one of the last remaining British-owned carmakers, was bought by the Italian investment firm in 2019. Investindustrial had stakes in a range of automotive marques, including Aston Martin and Ducati.

Has the investment benefitted Morgan? I think a general opinion is yes; they have three fabulous motor cars on offer, the Super 3 (no points for guessing how many wheels), the Super 4 and the Super 6.

The Morgan 3 is fitted with a 1,432cc engine and passes 62mph in 7 seconds. The Super 2 has a BMW 2.0-litre Twin-Power Turbo with automatic hits 62mph in 4.8 seconds, and the Super 3 is powered by BMW B58 Twin-Power Turbo inline six-cylinder engine and surpasses 62mph in 4.2 seconds.

‘A mechanical connection to your machine with exposure to your surroundings. The sights, the sounds, the smells and vibrations. With every drive, your senses are heightened as you are forced to remain present and focussed.’

The Morgan family will continue to represent the brand and retain a minority stake, and I believe the managers and the workforce will have a stake in the business.

Long live the Moggie.
