Arrogant, Stubborn, Tyrant, Genius?

15 June 2023

Few of the personalities in racing history have had tongues like Enzo Ferrari.

Arrogant, stubborn, tyrant, genius and self-aware, Ferrari’s words were as great as his cars.

I like to provide the odd quote or three for regular readers of my newsletter.

Not surprisingly, Enzo’s are featured quite frequently.

Just a sample:

✺ Ferraris are designed by hearts and minds.

✺ I build engines and attach wheels to them.

✺ I should like to put something new into my cars every morning – an inclination that terrifies my staff.

✺ My cars must be beautiful. But more than that, they must not stop out on the circuit. For then, people will say, ‘What a pity, it was so pretty.

✺ Racing is a great mania to which one must sacrifice everything, without reticence, without hesitation.

✺ The Ferrari is a dream. People dream of owning this special vehicle; for most, it will remain a dream apart from those lucky few.

✺ When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.

✺ You must have the courage to stand up to your critics.

✺ What’s behind you doesn’t matter.

✺ Aerodynamics are for people who can’t build engines.

‘I have yet to meet anyone quite so stubborn as myself and animated by this overpowering passion that leaves me no time for thought or anything else. I have, in fact, no interest in life outside racing cars.’
